so after the successful parka cover i made for c, i was feeling pretty darn good. i decided i should go ahead and try my first solo atikluq or kuspuk. solo.. meaning no mama, auntie, or aana (inupiaq grandma) to help. i wanted to make a short style little girl kind... but after about 8 hours of constant confusion and slight frustration i've decided kuspuk making is not for me. granted it was my first go at it..really..with no real pattern or direction..i still didn't enjoy the journey. it's good to share successes AND failures right!? well, the hood was a nightmare, the cuffs confused the heck outta me, the arms, length, style.. good lord! it might look alright from a distance.. but please do not zoom in. the details are embarrassing. i think this is the first and last for me... luckily it's too big for the lovelies right now, they'll have to share this one when they're a bit older.. and maybe by then they'll know how to use an ulu and can wear this to cut fish! we're lucky to have aunties and cousins who make amazing atikluqs with pretty much their eyes closed. we'll go to them next time we need a new one. i'll stick to my knitting needles and yarn.

Mori....good one. It does look good from a distance. I think you need your mama on this one. :)

oh shucks. I hate it when projects that are supposed to be fun turn into a lot of work with not much reward. Even though I have sewn a lots of kuspuks but the last one I did was a real bummer. Everything that could go wrong did. I think it will be a while before I sew another. Your kuspuk really doesn't look that bad though! Love the fabric.
I remember my first one. It was horrible. Ugh. The hood was too small for the head to go through and my baby sister had to wear the hood up the entire time!!! And I forgot to put a pocket on.
Now I can make them with my eyes closed with no pattern.
Practice Makes Perfect. Just keep making them and you'll get better. No one ever complained about my first ugly ones, and plus, like you said, you ALWAYS need fish/ugruk/caribou cutting so keep on keeping on!
It's beautiful Mori. Good for you for trying. I just myself learned how to sew a button on something. HA! So you are light years ahead of me. I'm sure your little ones will love wearing this and think it's perfect.
I love it Mor,
dont give up...that is exactly how you learn! i do use a pattern, but it took time for me to learn too.
love the fabric...it looks good.
you can always pick fabric and send it to me :) kkl
